Artist David Macaluso Recycles Oil Into Art

The show presents eleven works by Mr. Macaluso, including two portraits of Barack Obama (used motor oil and mixed media on paper 2008).The Gulf oil spill, the worst environmental disaster in United States history, reminds everyone that “addiction to oil” has some real serious consequences that Mr. Macalusos artwork is focused on addressing.In 2009 his method evolved from painting with the oil to containing the black, sludgy liquid in vials.His recent works, "Vial Arches" (2009-present), are used motor oil and mixed media assemblages that blur the line between painting and sculpture, and serve as a reflection of life in the Age of Oil.Samples of David Macaluso’s used motor oil art will be on display at the Brea Art Gallery, in Brea, California, for a group exhibition called Repurpose, Reuse, Recycle.The show presents eleven works by Mr. Macaluso, including two portraits of Barack Obama (used motor oil and mixed media on paper 2008).
