Layar, an Amsterdam-The Netherlands-based application which displays real time digital information through the camera of a mobile phone, has received an undisclosed investment.The round was co-led by Prime Technology Ventures, through its third fund PTV III, and Sunstone Capital.Layar provides a free browser application which superimposes images, animations, text, links and other digital information on top of real-world objects in the mobile phone camera view.Around its application, the company has built an active developer community by embracing an open platform where third party developers can design their own ‘Layers’ according to the Layar protocol and API.The company has reached agreement with one of the top 3 mobile handset manufacturers for a global distribution partnership, which will bring Layar capable phones to the mass market.
