Review: Roku HD1000 Digital Media Player

We also placed four Roku applications in these shared folders: Connecting to the Windows XP and Xandros 2.0 systems proved to be all but effortless. Once the HD1000 scanned the network and found available shares, it was simply a matter of setting up a login ID/password on each of the machines and we could access media and Roku apps on these two systems. We actually tried two different Mac systems — a G4 and a spiffy new G5 — but in both instances, the HD1000 couldn’t find the resource on the network, despite having Personal File Sharing turned on and rights assigned to the target folder. The Roku OS uses Samba to access shared resources on Windows, Mac, and Linux machines, and the overall implementation is very easy to use. The Roku OS also uses BusyBox, a compact suite of applications for embedded Linux that includes most of the console commands you’d want in a Linux system, like chmod, chroot, cp, dmesg, dos2unix, find, ftpget, ftpput, grep, gunzip, gzip, ping, traceroute, and dozens more.
