Mr Yum gears up for QR code ‘land grab’
Summary
Digital menu provider Mr Yum is taking its QR code-driven platform to the US and the UK, bolstered by a brand-new funding round led by venture capital firms TEN13 and AirTree Ventures. The Melbourne-based startup, which lets users order food and drinks using QR codes in restaurants, cafes and pubs, has secured $11 million in fresh capital and is banking on the continued adoption of QR codes globally, as consumers get comfortable with the technology used extensively to conduct contact tracing during the pandemic. Mr Yum’s chief executive Kim Teo said the international expansion was a “land grab opportunity” at a critical tipping point in the adoption of the technology. “We are launching both [the US and the UK] at the same time so that is a little bit crazy, but really, really great timing to do it on the back of the cities opening up and the countries opening up post -COVID,” she said.
