Data in Everyday Life: Airlines in the Age of COVID-19

General News

Summary

The charts below are likely representative of any industry we could examine for 2020 – a sharp decline from March to April and a slow (but evident) rebound moving forward. It is of little surprise that even a control chart can tell that 2020 was quite literally a year full of non-normal (or Special Cause) variation. In a year where nearly every personal and professional function was forced to re-invent itself, the airline industry saw an unimaginable decline in travelers. I plotted the monthly numbers from each of the last 10 years on a multi-line chart. Before 2020, air travel was consistently increasing for each of the previous years.
