This requires a hardware and software infrastructure to ensure a duplicate version of the data is available should it be needed. A PDM system is great for managing this – It acts as a traffic cop, to make sure the right people are getting the right file version and don’t overwrite one another. Allows for searching of CAD data If your information is stored in a PDM system, it is useless if you cannot get at it when you need to. Engineers must become data management experts or at least proficient at using a tool very different from their CAD system. Another interesting aspect is that the CAD files cannot be collaborated on simultaneously even though they are being stored in a database that could allow this.
