Start-up Spotlight: Igniting the second-hand textbook market
Summary
Quillo is a new start-up in the form of a digital marketplace, which works to connect buyers and sellers of second-hand textbooks at tertiary education institutions. Having launched in February 2018, the company currently serves 18 000 students at ten institutions around South Africa and aims to provide users with widespread and easy access to affordable textbooks. Quillo was started by Tamir Shklaz, an electrical and computer engineering student, who is currently in his fourth year of study at the University of Cape Town. This is the company’s first project undertaken in line with its broader goal of solving basic information inefficiencies within the student sector in the country and on the continent as a whole. Other exciting and upcoming opportunities for growth lie in partnerships with tertiary education institutions and brick-and-mortar bookshops, which are looking to white-label Quillo’s solution.
