A serious illness, death in the family, car accident, or other disaster are all legitimate reasons for distraction. In my case, my father was in ICU after a fall and hip surgery and I had to be able to respond if his condition deteriorated so I carried my phone with me during that time. That DUI over the weekend, overdrawing their bank account, being talked into some activity that was of dubious nature are all examples of that. I even had a bipolar employee who knowingly went off their meds for no good reason and had a screaming break down while at work. And if they have to cover for employees who are constantly late or absent, resentment will quickly build up.
