Do you remember the first time that you walked into a room and tried to get blood from a dead person? One of my favorites was an elderly gentleman that I will call Mr. T. He always had his radio on when I got to his room, just loud enough to hear because he didn’t want to disturb his roommate. I looked forward to going into his room every day because I would draw his blood and then visit with him for a bit. I ran to the nurse’s station and yelled at them that we needed to call a Code Blue on Mr. T. They just looked at me and laughed. But I never forgot that man and hope that I always remember to take a few minutes with my patients because it may be last time that I ever see them.
