This is my understanding: Link quality was updated in betaflight 4.2 to show more realistic numbers: 1-100% rather than 300%. When you are close to home and overall signal strength is good, it will run 2, it updates the fastest and has an easy time talking to radio. When you go out a little further and it has more interference, it will slow down date transfer and drop to stage 1 and put out packets at 50hz meaning you have greater range with less updating.
