Cisco eyes consumer electronics business
Summary
Cisco is planning to enter the consumer electronics business. "Consumer electronics companies have been able to compete on a standalone device but the dynamics of the market are changing," chief development officer Charles Giancarlo told the Financial Times. "The Internet and new networking requirements are enough of a disrupter for us to enter a new market." The company has been moving closer to consumers through a series of acquisitions. In 2003, Cisco acquired Linksys, which makes networking gear for home and small business users, then last year it purchased consumer set-top box maker Scientific Atlanta and KiSS Technology, a Danish maker of networked home entertainment devices.
