Ex-Angel star Doug DeCinces expected to testify against one-time co-defendant in insider-trader case

SANTA ANA – A CEO accused of providing former Angel star Doug DeCinces with insider-trading information is once again on trial in federal court, except this time, lawyers in the case say, his ex-ballplayer friend will testify against him. Prosecutors allege that Mazzo in 2008 provided insider information to DeCinces, a former third baseman who played decades ago for the Orioles and the Angels, and Mazzo’s Laguna Beach neighbor, helping the ex-ballplayer turn a $1.3 million profit in the stock market. Prosecutors contend that Mazzo tipped DeCinces to a pending 2008 buyout of Advanced Medical Optics, which made equipment for LASIK surgery and contact-lens-related products, by larger Abbott Laboratories. During opening statements Wednesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Cazares said DeCinces now admits to having received information about the pending Abbot buyout from Mazzo on at least two occasions. The defense attorney said that by cooperating with prosecutors, DeCinces could potentially avoid any time behind bars.
