HTC purchases mobile software company Abaxia for $13M

Abaxia lists three core products on its website: Mobile Portal, an embedded application that lets carriers add services and information on a phone’s idle screen; Mobile Finder, which brings device and web search to the idle screen; and the Abaxia Open Platform, which is a server solution that pushes content, search, and advertising to mobile device idle screens. All of the services will likely be integrated into HTC’s Sense user interface, which runs on top of mobile operating systems like Android. Carriers may find a lot to like in Mobile Portal, since it allows them to push content directly to phone idle screens. They may also appreciate the ability to create widgets (small applications) that run across multiple mobile platforms, IntoMobile speculates. It’s less clear what the Open Platform will mean for HTC, but it sounds like something carriers can deploy to help manage the content pushed to idle screens.
