Skoda don’t make many mistakes with their model range, but they did drop the ball in 2011 with the Rapid. The diesel probably won’t sell in large numbers here due to the current anti-diesel mood, but if you cover a high mileage it is still worth a look. Sitting on a modified MQB platform, similar to that of the Golf, the car feels firmly planted on the road. There is good attention to detail, including hidden away umbrellas and a false floor in the boot to hide small articles from prying eyes. This engine is slightly less smooth, even if it isn’t working quite as hard as the triple, and mating it with a DSG twin-clutch auto gearbox furthered the sense of lack of involvement in comparison.
