Summary
The LIS can streamline a lab’s workflow by sending orders and receiving results from the lab equipment through interfaces. Paper requisitions can be lost, torn, or incomplete causing delays and inconsistencies in test orders. When a lab completes their testing, the results are transmitted back to the EMR or HIS for the provider review. I remember the day of having to leave the lab to run reports to the nurses’ stations or ER when I still had more testing to complete. Pressing a button to send the results means no interruption in workflow in the already short staffed lab.
