Summary
What is best for the patient and what the provider prescribes are no longer top priority in this health care climate. Some patients simply live too far away from a lab to get their blood drawn frequently. I was opposed to this for a long time but seeing the difficulty that these regular blood draws caused my patients made me reconsider. Trauma at the site, hemoconcentration, contamination from tissue juices, timing of the stick with the actual testing all have to be considered. One of the companies that makes INR monitors has a great program for home testing.
