Linux Foundation, Tech Giants Launch Akrites to Defend Open Source Against AI-Powered Attacks

General News

Summary

The Linux Foundation launched Akrites with 19 founding organizations to coordinate rapid remediation of open-source vulnerabilities. The initiative responds to AI systems that can now find and validate flaws much faster than traditional disclosure and patch workflows can handle. Akrites creates a single security incident response path for maintainers and can step in as a maintainer of last resort for critical unowned packages. The effort also aims to improve patch deployment downstream, not just patch publication, and it includes seed funding from the Alpha-Omega fund.
