Qualcomm buys Modular to challenge Nvidia’s AI software edge
Summary
Qualcomm will acquire Modular in an all-stock deal valued at nearly $4 billion. The deal gives Qualcomm software that helps AI models run across different processors without custom code for each chip. Qualcomm wants to strengthen its position in data-center computing and generative AI while reducing reliance on smartphone chips. Modular’s neutral inference layer also positions Qualcomm to compete more directly with Nvidia’s software ecosystem. The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2026, and Qualcomm may pursue more AI-related acquisitions.
