Ubuntu Myna: Speech recognition for the Linux desktop
Summary
Canonical is developing Myna, a native speech recognition and dictation feature for Ubuntu Desktop. The system runs locally on the device, so it does not need an internet connection once the models are installed. Canonical designed it with privacy in mind and processes audio only in memory before discarding it. The first release targets Ubuntu 26.10 on Wayland, with GNOME as the primary tested environment, and Canonical is keeping the initial scope narrow to get the core dictation experience right. The company is sharing the project early to gather feedback while the software is still in an early development stage.
