Equinix pilots hydrogen power generators in Dublin data centre

Equinix is running a 12-week pilot of hydrogen-powered backup generators at its DB3 data centre in Dublin. The trial uses units from GeoPura and ESB to support cooling systems and test a lower-carbon alternative to conventional backup power. The project is designed to address grid constraints, reduce emissions, and collect data that could inform policymakers and other stakeholders. Equinix says the setup has already helped push the site’s power usage effectiveness below 1.3. The pilot also points to broader opportunities for hydrogen systems in backup power, construction sites, and other temporary energy use cases.
