Top prize for life-saving design

Two former students won the Shell LiveWIRE Young Entrepreneur 2004 title for founding Lightweight Medical Ltd in Edinburgh. The company designs intensive care equipment for premature and sick babies and says it aims to save lives while building a successful business. The founders built the business around identifying problems with medical products by talking directly to medical staff and then fixing those issues. Judges praised the speed at which the company established itself as a leader in its sector.
