Claus Wellenreuther, one of SAP's five co-founders and the architect of its financial accounting module, died on March 21, 2026 at age 91. He built the FI backbone that made SAP attractive to large German industrial customers, left the company in 1980 for health reasons with a DM 1 million severance, and later founded DCW Software as an ERP alternative for the Mittelstand. SAP acquired DCW in 2003 in a transaction described in trade press as "a deal among friends," a move that was controversial among DCW customers. His financial-accounting architecture remained central to SAP products for decades, and he largely avoided public attention during his life.
