IEEE Standards Association launched the IEEE Global Medical Mobile App Assessment and Registry to vet therapeutic mobile apps for technical soundness, ethical design, data security, and clinical efficacy. Developers submit apps voluntarily and pay a nonrefundable fee; IEEE evaluates submissions against about 150 consensus-based criteria and aims to complete reviews in roughly six to eight weeks. Approved apps must meet more than 85% compliance in each major category, receive an IEEE certification badge and identifier, and are listed in a publicly searchable registry. The program targets SaMD therapeutic apps (initially prioritizing mental-health offerings) and aims to give patients, clinicians, and payers a trustworthy way to identify clinically meaningful apps.
