Less than 1% of generative AI queries send traffic to news media
Summary
A GfK DAM study finds that only 0.43% of global generative AI queries lead to a visit or click to media websites, meaning fewer than one in 230 AI interactions drive traffic to original sources. Spain has seen extremely rapid adoption of generative AI—penetration rose from 6% in 2023 to 58%—with ChatGPT as the mass-market leader and Gemini, Copilot and Grok playing important secondary roles. The report shows evergreen, how-to and practical brand content lose the most traffic to AI, while breaking news still drives direct visits, and brands are seeing purchase-decision journeys migrate into AI environments. GfK recommends publishers focus on high-quality, non-derivative content, measure quality metrics beyond unique visitors, and explore partnerships with advertisers to place authoritative content into the AI ecosystem.
