Uber is deploying its own self-driving cars again, just not as robotaxis

New Products

Summary

Uber is rolling out an AV Lab fleet of manually driven vehicles outfitted with cameras, lidar, and radar to collect driving data for its robotaxi partners rather than operate as robotaxis. The program starts with a single Hyundai Ioniq 5 and aims to produce at least 2 million miles of data per month by the end of the year, scaling further in 2027. Uber will provide the collected driving data free to partners such as Wayve, WeRide, Nuro, and Waabi to help them train and scale their autonomous services. The initiative complements Uber Autonomous Solutions and leverages Uber’s ridehail network to expose partners to the many edge cases encountered across its 40M daily trips.
