AI gives China ‘God’s-eye view’ of solar, wind installations as data-centre demand booms

General News

Summary

Peking University and Alibaba’s Damo Academy used a self-developed AI model to process 7.56 terabytes of satellite imagery and identify 319,972 solar photovoltaic facilities and 91,609 wind turbines across China as of 2022. The work produced the first large-scale, high-resolution national inventory of wind and solar sites to support power-grid optimisation and environmental evaluation. The mapping effort aims to help coordinate China’s green transition amid a surge in data-centre demand that stresses the national grid. The findings were published in Nature and demonstrate how AI and satellite data can deliver actionable infrastructure intelligence at national scale.
