FTC Chairman Ferguson Advises Companies to Comply with the Take It Down Act

The FTC chair sent letters to more than a dozen major technology platforms reminding them to comply with the Take It Down Act by May 19. The law requires covered platforms to provide clear notice of a removal process and to take down nonconsensual intimate images and all identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. The letters were addressed to major software and platform companies including Amazon, Alphabet, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok, X and others, and outline definitions, requirements, and penalties for non-compliance. The FTC said it will monitor compliance, investigate violations, and enforce the law, emphasizing protection of vulnerable users, especially children.
