Machine payments: When agents start paying agents
Summary
AI agents are beginning to pay other agents directly in milliseconds for data, compute and API capabilities, creating a new category of machine-to-machine commerce that bypasses human involvement. Two protocols are leading the infrastructure: Stripe’s Machine Payments Protocol (MPP), which supports fiat and stablecoin settlement and integrates with existing payment rails, and Coinbase’s x402, a lightweight, stablecoin-native revival of HTTP 402. Stablecoins enable instant, fractional, borderless settlement and unlock new business models like per-article, per-API-call, or per-task pricing that make microtransactions economically viable. Major execution gaps remain around dispute resolution, auditability, credential management and preventing erroneous automated charges, so the protocol layer currently outpaces reliability and governance. Companies and developers who solve these operational and trust challenges now will shape the architecture and commercial rules for internet-scale machine payments.
