Updates to GitHub Copilot interaction data usage policy
Summary
GitHub updated its Copilot interaction data usage policy: starting April 24, interaction data (inputs, outputs, code snippets, context, feedback and feature interactions) from Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ users may be used to train AI models unless users opt out. Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise customers are excluded, and users who previously opted out retain that preference unless they opt in. GitHub says it will not use enterprise-owned repository interaction data, issues, discussions, or private repository content at rest, and it will share collected interaction data with GitHub affiliates (including Microsoft) but not with third-party AI model providers. The company frames the change as necessary to improve model performance and security, and directs users to settings and an FAQ to manage their participation.
