OpenAI is retiring GPT-4o - again: What it means for you, and why some users are upset

OpenAI will retire GPT-4o and several other models on Feb. 13, removing them from ChatGPT's model selector for paid users while keeping existing chats accessible and preserving API access for the foreseeable future. The company says only about 1% of users still engage with GPT-4o, and it will migrate existing GPTs based on retiring models to GPT-5.2. Voice and image generation features remain unaffected because they use a different model. Some paying users who prefer GPT-4o's conversational tone are upset and have attempted to rally support to reverse the decision. For most users the transition should be seamless, especially free users who already default to GPT-5.
