Waymo recalled 672 vehicles after its automated driving software failed to reliably avoid poles and similar stationary objects. The issue affected certain fifth-generation ADS software and older map software versions, prompting an update on June 6. NHTSA had already opened an investigation after receiving multiple collision reports involving parked or semi-stationary objects and traffic control devices. Despite the recall, Waymo says its robotaxi service is still growing and now serves more than 50,000 paid trips each week. The company is also moving ahead with testing and validation for its sixth-generation Waymo Driver.
