Fermelanta nets $13.6m to engineer microbes for complex plant metabolite production

Fermelanta raised a JPY2 billion Series A round to expand its microbial fermentation platform for complex plant metabolites. The company engineers bacteria to produce high-value compounds such as morphine-related alkaloids, flavonoids, carotenoids, and other ingredients used in pharma, nutraceuticals, flavors, fragrances, and cosmetics. It plans to spend the capital on R&D pipelines, pilot-scale production, and partnerships with CDMOs to move from lab output to commercial manufacturing. Fermelanta also started building a pilot plant with a 3,000-liter fermentation tank and expects completion in May 2026.
