Sinclair's services expand with $900K for mental health, basic needs

DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) Students at Sinclair Community College are being offered new resources through the U.S. Department of Education granting the school a $900,000 grant to support students with mental health concerns and basic need insecurity.The Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students Program gives grants to eligible institutions of higher education to support programs that address the basic needs of students and to report on practices that improve outcomes for students.Dr. Lorrie Spivey, PsyD, NCC, LPC, Manager of Accessibility Services at Sinclair Community College expressed excitement and optimism about the school receiving the grant.In alignment with Sinclairs mission, this grant will enable us to expand upon current services and address the essential needs of our students, while empowering them through resilience and building opportunities," she said.The $900,000 grant will be allocated over the course of three years and will give Sinclairs Accessibility Services Department the resources necessary to continue to meet the needs of students.The Basic Needs for Postsecondary Students Program will allow students to have better access to education counseling, peer support groups and more awareness of on and off campus mental health resources.In addition, having more counseling staff will give the college more opportunities to offer evidence-based supported education counseling. This will allow staff to identify the needs of students earlier, which in turn, will lower the cases that could impact college persistence and create opportunities to connect with the resources they need.Sinclairs Student Resilience Center is already underway for the Spring 2025 term through the colleges Accessibility Services Department.
