Summary
In 2019, 368 million tons of plastic were produced in the world, and it is estimated that by 2050 there will be 1.2 billion tons per year. This is a big problem because current recycling technologies only allow us to recirculate 2% of the plastic we produce, so each year we dispose of millions of tons into the environment, causing ecological and health damage. The problem with current recycling technologies is that they do not generate a recycled resin with the same properties as virgin resins, so they cannot be used to generate the same products and 2/3 of their economic value is lost. That is why we need to develop better recycling technologies that generate a recycled resin equal to virgin resin and thus recover 100% of its economic value, only then can we transform the linear economy of plastic into a circular and sustainable one.
