The willingness to try new approaches will be essential if our institutions of higher learning are to return to their core mission of preparing students for fulfilling lives and careers and stop saddling them with crushing debt that will hang over them for decades. To achieve that goal, the leaders of those institutions must begin thinking more like educators and less like entrepreneurs. Unlike businesses, whose goals mostly center around maximizing profits for shareholders, our HE mission is to develop the next generation of critical thinkers and global problem solvers, and serve our communities. At Duquesne University, we live the mission of serving students so they in turn can serve their communities (local and global). And we believe that the brightest future (for all of us) begins with education.
