New borough policy in the works for dealing with large derelict vessels

Several large derelict vessels moored in Petersburgs harbors, have reached a point where they might not survive another winter. Harbormaster Glo Wollen is working with Borough Attorney Sara Heideman to adapt Petersburgs municipal code concerning derelict vessels, before its too late. Currently, Petersburgs municipal code includes a set of procedures that direct the harbor to impound or auction abandoned or potentially dangerous derelict vessels. The new procedure being developed will concern the larger vessels – those five net tons or more that are registered with the U.S. Coast Guard.
