Summary
The UArts app is part of a larger mobile technology movement many schools, associations, and corporations are using to engage their constituents who consider smartphones to be their primary method of communication. Studies suggest at least 75 percent of college students consider themselves dependent on smartphones and one in five describe themselves as “lost” without a mobile device. For UArts Day, the app was populated with a list of 50 area locations near the school’s Philadelphia-based campus with descriptions and directions. Students were then able to use the app to document their visits to the areas as “completions” by taking a photo of the landmark or a selfie at the location. The app also featured gamification and social elements by tracking each student’s progress through a leaderboard and the ability to see other students’ event completions through a scrollable photo-based highlight reel.
