Summary

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Starting in early 2024, New Yorkers will be able to directly file their taxes with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance for free online. The new, one-of-a-kind software hopes to produce a new approach directed at streamlining state tax filing and making the process easier for all. To develop the software, New York is partnering with Code for America, a leading civic tech nonprofit that builds digital tools and services. I am incredibly proud that New York will be one of the first states in the nation to take this bold step, and I look forward to continued collaboration with our partners at the IRS and Code for America to ensure that New Yorkers can make the most of this new tool when it launches.” Working in collaboration with Code for America is the New York Department of Taxation and Finance; together, the joint efforts look to develop and refine the state e-filing tool’s capabilities. This pilot will provide data to the IRS so that they may evaluate the costs, benefits, and operational challenges resulting from a voluntary Direct File option.
