Texas city pilots new thermal detection software to halt wrong-way drivers

IRVING, Texas — The city of Irving is working with law enforcement to curb occurrences of impaired or inattentive drivers traveling on the wrong side of the road through new technology. WFAA News reports the city of Irving is now piloting FLIR, a detection tool that utilizes thermal sensors below the pavement at toll booths to activate flashing lights when someone is driving in the wrong direction. The system then sends a signal to a 24/7 safety operations center and state police are dispatched. A $164,430 grant awarded to the city of Irving paid for the installation of the system along several state corridors. A similar system is already in use by the North Texas Tollway Authority to stop wrong-way drivers.
