Japan to end daily arrivals cap; allow visa-free tourism starting Oct. 11, 2022

Currently, Japan capps daily arrivals at 50,000 and required all foreign tourists to enter the country as part of registered tour groups. However, it has maintained strict entry requirements longer than other APAC nations and its economy has suffered as a result. Singapore and Australia, which eased their COVID restrictions, are already seeing volumes ahead of their 2019 levels. Japan will likely catch up quickly as a weak yen, makes the country an appealing destination. Even before the new eased entry rules go into effect, Japan will see a spike in traffic in late September, as a large contingent of heads of state and dignitaries visit Tokyo for the funeral of assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
